BUDA — Buda City Council recently accepted a total of $3 million in investment from the Buda Economic Development Corporation (EDC) to support the expansion of Buda Championship Park and grow sports tourism.
The investment includes two $1.5 million contributions, with the most recent approved by the Buda EDC Board May 11 to help offset construction costs, following an earlier contribution that supported design and pre-construction work. An eight-year performance agreement between the city and EDC establishes shared goals for attracting tournaments and generating economic activity in the community, stated a news release.
The redevelopment is designed to create a tournament-ready sports destination. Once complete, Buda Championship Park will be able to host up to 112 softball or baseball teams over a three-day tournament and will offer eight softball fields with adjustable base lines, 20 batting cages and NCAA Division I sand-draining surfaces, lighted for evening play. Built for high-level competition, the fields can accommodate softball through the collegiate level and baseball through 12U. Additional improvements include four re-sodded fields for soccer, flag football and other field sports, more than 800 parking spaces and controlled gate entry for event ticketing.

This partnership elevates our athletic fields to be the finest in the region, adds four additional softball fields and positions Buda to host tournaments that will bring thousands of visitors to Buda, providing meaningful economic benefit to our local restaurants, shops, hotels and businesses” said Mayor Lee Urbanovsky.
The investment reflects a shared strategy by the city and Buda EDC to use sports tourism as an economic development tool, bringing regional and national tournaments to Buda, increasing overnight visitation and generating additional activity for the community’s hotels, restaurants, retailers and other businesses, the release continued.
“This $3 million investment is about much more than fields — it is an investment in Buda’s economy,” said Jim Niemie, Buda EDC board president. “Buda Championship Park gives us an opportunity to bring thousands of athletes, families and tournament organizers into our community, introduce them to our local businesses and create economic activity that extends well beyond the park itself. This is exactly the kind of strategic partnership that allows economic development dollars to generate broader benefits for Buda.”
Within five miles of the park, Buda boasts more 700 hotel rooms, 30 restaurants and food trucks and 260,000 square feet of retail, including Cabela’s, along with family-friendly activities, such as Inspired Minds Art Center, Pinballz Arcade and 16 parks.
The performance agreement recognizes the potential for the facility to generate economic development opportunities that directly benefit local commercial interests through tournament activity.
The agreement establishes measurable tournament and tourism objectives. Beginning in the third full calendar year of operation, the city is expected to host at least 11 qualifying tournaments annually, averaging at least 28 teams per tournament. Longer-term targets call for increased utilization, including at least 13 qualifying tournaments annually in later years and a minimum aggregate of 65 qualifying tournaments during years four through eight.
“This partnership demonstrates how the city and EDC can align investments in infrastructure, tourism and economic development around a common goal,” said Buda EDC CEO Jennifer Storm. “Our objective is not simply to host tournaments. It is to create an experience that encourages visitors to stay in Buda, spend time in our community and come back again.”
