Once again, the Hays County Commissioners Court has proclaimed Jan. 20 to be Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The court voted unanimously on the designation during their Tuesday meeting. Celebrations of what would have been Dr. King’s 91st birthday include a wreath-laying ceremony in San Marcos at the Crossroads Memorial located at the intersection of LBJ and MLK, followed by a silent march to Dunbar Recreation Center.
MLK Day was observed as a federal holiday in all 50 U.S. states for the first time in 2000. Many communities also observe a “Day of Service” in memory of the slain civil rights leader.
According to the county proclamation, this year’s theme is “2020 Vision: Without a Vision the People Perish.”
