At its regular meeting, the Pedernales Electric Cooperative’s (PEC) Board of Directors discussed its continued response to COVID-19.
PEC activated its Emergency Operations Plan and took steps to mitigate risks, which included closing its offices to member interactions and having eligible staff work remotely.
PEC also suspended service disconnections and waived charges for all members in all rate classes, including late fees, collection fees, same day service fees and deposits. These measures, originally intended to last until April 17 have been extended until 60 days after Gov. Greg Abbott’s Executive Order GA 14 is lifted.
PEC already has some of the lowest rates among electric utilities in Texas, and has scheduled a $6 million permanent rate reduction that takes effect on June 1, 2020.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has had, and will continue to have, an enormous impact on our communities and businesses of all sizes,” said Paul Graf, PEC board president and District 6 director. “We feel it’s important to offer member support during these unprecedented times.”
PEC has traditionally offered payment assistance through its Community Support – Member Assistance Programs Policy. Members who require financial assistance are encouraged to contact PEC to set up payment arrangements, which will help ensure uninterrupted service and fees after a return to normal operations. PEC member relations agents are available by phone at 888-554-4732 to answer questions Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“PEC leadership and staff routinely work with members who need assistance, and we’re continuing that today,” said Julie Caruthers Parsley, PEC CEO. “The board’s decision, as well as the actions we have already taken, are the most impactful way to best serve the entire membership.”
