The COVID-19 pandemic has once again infringed on a tradition important to the community.
Labor Day Weekend in the city of Kyle will not be the same this year.
Kyle City Council decided to cancel the annual Pie in the Sky event for 2020. Due to concerns over the coronavirus, council members believe it is in the community’s best interest to skip the event this year.
Councilmember Robert Rizo said cancelling the event is upsetting yet understandable due to safety concerns.
“It’s a little sad to see it not happen this year but I know due to the circumstances, public safety is priority number one,” Rizo said.
Despite the circumstances, council member Alex Villalobos reflects on Pie in the Sky festivities from previous years.
“I’m going to miss the pie in the face and the pie eating contest,” Villalobos said.
City staff are looking at possibly hosting an amended event for Labor Day weekend.
