Becerra calls another special meeting

After failing to have a quorum on Monday, Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra is trying again.

He has called another meeting for 1 p.m. Friday with the same agenda: Discussion on the future of the Precinct 3 Constable's office in the wake of former Constable Ray Helm's resignation under fire July 31.

Becerra and Precinct 3 Commissioner Lon Shell were the only ones to show up for the Monday meeting.

Shell is one of three Republicans on the court. Absent were the other two, Mark Jones of Precinct 2 and Walt Smith of Precinct 4. Debbie Gonzales Ingalsbe, a Democrat, also did not show, though Becerra said she told him she would be there.

Helm is a Republican who handily won the party's March primary, and he had no Democratic opponent in the November general election. His resignation means both parties have a chance to put a candidate on the ballot.
