BUDA – Five touchdowns from sophomore quarterback Jesse Medina paced the Johnson Jaguars Friday as they scorched the neighbor Lehman Lobos 44-20 in the first ever meeting between both programs.
Offense was at a premium early on as neither team gained the upper hand in the first half. Lehman (2-3, 0-2) scored midway through the first quarter on a run by junior running back Robert Vasquez, which gave the Lobos a 7-0 lead.
Seconds before the halftime buzzer, Medina connected with junior wide receiver Ethan McAllister for a 31-yard touchdown that tied the score at 7-7 and gave the Jaguar offense momentum.
After Johnson’s (4-1, 2-0) defense secured an interception on the second play of the third quarter, the Jag offense capitalized with a 45-yard strike from Medina to McAlister, which pushed the lead to 14-7.
Johnson added nine more unanswered points, which included a safety on a botched Lobo punt, to capture a 23-7 advantage. Lehman, however, didn’t back down; the Lobos responded with a 23-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Joey Guajardo to senior wide receiver Elijah Reyes to cut the Jaguar lead to 23-14 in the third frame.
But Lehman’s defense never had an answer for Johnson’s quick strike offense as the Jaguars outscored the Lobos 21-6 the rest of the way.
Medina went 13 of 25 for 293 yards and five touchdowns, all career highs. McAlister finished with six catches for 148 yards and a trio of touchdowns while teammate Rich Kelly also had six receptions for 137 yards and two scores.
Guajardo went 10 of 24 passing for 107 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Lobo running back Joey Mojica rushed for 66 yards on nine carries and Nick Martinez had 34 yards on 12 rushes.
Coming up, Johnson hosts San Antonio Veterans Memorial Nov. 6 at Bob Shelton Stadium. Lehman travels to play at Dripping Springs.
