KYLE — West Ranch to Market 150 is one step closer to having a new name after the newly- formed ad hoc committee had its first meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

The Kyle City Council previously renamed Rebel Drive to Fajita Drive back in August in hopes to honor local icon Juan Antonio “Sonny” Falcon, known as the fajita king. After there was much backlash against the previous decision that did not involve the public, city council rescinded their previous vote to form the West RM 150 Naming Committee.

“That committee should comprise a diverse group,” council member Alex Villalobos said during a special meeting on Aug. 25. “Business owners, property and land owners off of that area and also across the city as well. Just to make sure we have representation to ensure we are seeing everything and we are addressing all the different probabilities of expense.”

Originally, the committee was to be composed of only seven members but the Kyle City Council appointed all 15 applicants. The committee’s main responsibility is to agree on a new name for the portion of West RM 150 and go before the city council for approval.

“I really have faith in this committee that we can be able to come up with a name for this road that has such a great history behind it,” Michael Tobias, council member, said.

Vanessa Westbrook, Kyle resident and member of the Hays County Historical Commission, was elected Chair and Fred Guerra, Kyle resident, was elected Vice Chair after fellow committee members believed they were best suited for the job.

The West RM 150 Naming Committee will have its second meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. with a location to be determined. It will be up to the committee to decide the timeline for a new name along with how often meetings will be held.

“We don’t want to rush through this, but we do want to have time to have great discussion and be able to put something forth that we believe our neighbors would be proud of,” Westbrook said.
