KYLE – Quick scores early and often Friday pushed the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars to a lopsided 49-7 win over the Lehman Lobos at Bob Shelton Stadium.
The Cougar tandem of senior running back Micah Williford and junior quarterback Drew Berry exacted the most damage as the duo combined for four total touchdowns in the first half. Williford began the barrage with a 37-yard touchdown run within the first few minutes.
Berry and Williford traded scores from there, which included touchdown passes from Berry to wide receivers Jack Loos and Seath Seeley, to push Canyon's lead to 28-0.
The Lobos responded with their lone score of the night on a 15-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Zackary Casarez with 3:43 to go in the second frame.
But the Cougars responded before halftime with a drive culminating in an 8-yard touchdown run from sophomore running back Jacob Alcorta to take a 35-7 lead.
Canyon's lead swelled to 42-7 in the third frame off of a 17-yard touchdown pass from Berry to senior wide receiver Kyle Ensley. Berry added the game's final score on a quarterback keeper for a touchdown.
The Lobos still have a chance on qualifying for the postseason but will have to win out on the road against McCollum (0-4) and Seguin before finishing the regular season at home against Veterans Memorial.
Lehman will travel to face the McCollum Cowboys on Friday night at 7:30pm.
