Teachers recognized for going above and beyond

Trustee Barbara Stroud presenting to Sherry Gillmore.

On Jan. 28, Dripping Springs ISD elementary students who placed first in the district UIL academic competition were recognized. Employees receiving Above and Beyond Awards for the month of January were: Nichole Bills (Dripping Springs Elementary), Dustin Brothers (Dripping Springs Middle School), Laura Filipovich (Walnut Springs Elementary), Ana Garcia and Jennifer Beeler (Sycamore Springs Middle School), Sherry Gillmore (Transportation), Amy Larson (Rooster Springs Elementary), Laura Podd (Dripping Springs High School), and Anabel Walters and Kirsten Walker (Sycamore Springs Elementary). Superintendent Bruce Gearing also recognized trustees in honor of School Board Recognition Month.

Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Innovation Dr. Nicole Poenitzsch summarized the TAPR (Texas Academic Performance Report) for 2018. She highlighted key results in all subject areas, all of which exceed the state and region marks.

Project Manager Mike Garcia gave an overview of progress of 2018 bond projects and projected timeline. He reported on progress of “Phase 1” projects: the expansion of Dripping Springs High School, renovations at Dripping Springs Elementary and Rooster Springs Elementary, turf/track replacements at DSMS and DSHS, and the expansion of the Transportation Center. Secure vestibules in front offices are near completion.

In the Superintendent’s Report,  Gearing referenced the enrollment report, the demographic study that is underway, and charter school notices.

Dr. Poenitzsch reported on professional development activities and the social-emotional learning survey. Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Kay Kizziar shared status report on staffing in support areas, the Child Nutrition Department, and the Community Services Department. Dr. Gearing also did a first reading of Policy Update 112.

Board action included approval of an election order and joint election agreement with the City of Dripping Springs, an additional teaching position at Sycamore Springs Elementary to assist with classes that have exceeded the 22:1 ratio, 2019 budget parameters, and contracts for construction managers whose selection previously was approved.
