Authorities have identified a body found Saturday in the Blanco River in San Marcos as a Kyle man who had been missing since late December.

San Marcos Police and Fire personnel Jan. 12 recovered the body of Omar Maya-Rangel, 32, of Kyle, according to a city of San Marcos press release.

San Marcos emergency crews responded to the 1800 block of River Road around 2:45 p.m. Jan. 12 after a hiker discovered a body in the Blanco River.

Authorities worked to recover the body, which was identified as Maya-Rangel by tattoos and identification in his pocket.

Maya-Rangel was pronounced at the scene by Hays County Justice of the Peace Maggie H. Moreno, who also ordered an autopsy.

Maya-Rangel had initially been reported missing Dec. 28; the Hays County Sheriff's Office issued a press release Jan. 4 regarding his disappearance.

According to a release, the initial missing person’s report said Maya-Rangel was having mental health issues at the time of his disappearance. Maya-Rangel's vehicle was located in Caldwell County Dec. 31, 2018.

The San Marcos Police Department Criminal is investigating the incident.
