A furious Hays Lady Rebels fourth quarter rally wasn’t enough as the Bowie Lady Bulldogs claimed a 43-35 win Tuesday at Bales Gym.
Hays (11-18, 4-6 in district) led 7-4 after a low-scoring first frame highlighted by a three-pointer from senior Kaiya Ramos. The Rebels lead grew to 13-8 in the second quarter before Bowie orchestrated a 10-0 run, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 18-13 lead at intermission.
Bowie continued its onslaught by outscoring Hays 14-6 in the third quarter. Bowie led Hays 32-20.
Hays fought back in the fourth quarter aided by sophomore Lily Guevara, who scored eight of her team-high 12 points in the frame.
While Hays outscored Bowie down the stretch, they were unable to equalize before the final buzzer. Sophomore Trista Strasser recorded eight points and a team-high 10 boards, while Rebel Madison Logan scored six points.
Head coach Danny Preuss said he was proud of his squad’s effort in the close loss.
“We just took on the number two team in the district and made them work for everything they had,” Preuss said. “I thought the girls played hard and stayed in the game. They didn’t quit.”
Preuss is pleased with how his team has improved to this point in the season.
“We are lot better from day one to now,” Preuss said. “The youngsters have grown up a lot and we are giving people tough games.”
Hays returns to action when they travel to Akins High Friday before returning home to host Austin High Tuesday.
