Turnover problems were the downfall for the Hays Lady Rebels basketball team in a 53-24 defeat Jan. 2 to the Lake Travis Cavaliers.
The loss marked the team’s eighth-straight loss in a row dating back to Dec. 11.
Problems started in the first frame when Lake Travis leapt out to a 10-1 lead in the first frame.
Both team’s offenses kicked into gear in the second quarter, highlighted by key plays from Hays sophomore Lily Guevara and Madison Logan.
But Lake Travis’ offense followed suit, aided by eight Rebel turnovers, and gained further separation by taking a 22-9 lead into the second half.
Lake Travis continued their defensive dominance into the third quarter. The Lady Rebels struggled to get any offense going as turnovers continued to pile up.
However, Hays’ defense kept battling as three different Lady Rebels collected a steal in the quarter. Lake Travis led 32-15 going into the final frame.
The Lady Rebels were led offensively by Strasser, who recorded nine points, six rebounds, a block and an assist. Logan and Senior Giselle Bahenz both finished with three points. Guevara recorded four points, four rebounds and a steal.
Hays head coach Danny Preuss said his team was competitive in the loss, but failed to perform offensively.
“We had every opportunity in the first half and we just didn’t come through,” Preuss said. “Defensively I thought we did well, especially in the first quarter, but offensively it was horrible. We just did not execute.”
Preuss said his young squad needs to stay upbeat and not give up in order to get back to their winning ways.
“We are going to have to stay positive.” Preuss said. “We’re going to keep plugging and try to get a win next time out.”
Hays hits the road Friday to take on the Del Valle Lady Cardinals. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
