Staff Reports

An unexpired Kyle City Council seat for District 6, that was held by council member Daphne Tenorio, is expected to be filled by a special election Jan. 25. The seat remains open after Tenorio resigned in order to run for the office of Hays County Tax Assessor-Collector.

Two candidates, Michael Tobias and Brandy Heindl, threw their hats in the ring prior to the Dec. 16 filing deadline.

Tobias has been an officer with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office for 16 years. He has lived in Kyle for 15 years.

“Kyle has grown quite a bit throughout these years, and I am excited about the businesses and opportunities that we have attracted,” he said. “Unfortunately, as with all cities that experience rapid growth, we also face challenges. Public safety, infrastructure and keeping up with citizen demands are just a few of the challenges that we face. I decided to run for Kyle City Council because I care about this community and I would like to serve its citizens.”

Tobias’ wife Teresa is currently serving her second term on the board of trustees of the Hays CISD and  Tobias Elementary School is named after his father, Rosalio Tobias Jr., who was a Hays CISD school board trustee for over a decade.

“When I look at relationships that I have formed here in Kyle, I realize it is like a second family; I want the best for all of us in Kyle because people are what makes Kyle great,” Heindl said. “I view a seat on council as a chance to represent the best that Kyle has to offer, its citizens. I will work for and with the citizens of Kyle, I will help bring the citizens of Kyle into the decisions about what Kyle is and what we will become in the future while respecting the greatness that brought us here today.”

Only persons living in and registered to vote in this district can vote for this representative. The District 6 term will expire in November 2021.

The last day to register to vote in the special election is Dec. 26. Early and election day voting will take place at the Hays CISD administration office, 21003 Interstate 35 North.
