After leading Lehman High’s boys basketball team to a historic 16-win campaign in 2019, head coach Steven Pinchback will take his talents south next season.
On July 12, Pinchback announced he had been hired to helm the San Marcos High boys basketball program. Pinchback takes over for Thomas Acker, a former Lehman High head boys basketball coach, who went 24-44 in two years at San Marcos.
During his time at Lehman, Pinchback amassed a 27-38 overall mark, 9-19 in district play. Last season, Pinchback led the Lobos to a 16-16 record, setting the mark for the most wins in program history.
The Lobos also posted the program’s highest finish in the district standings since reaching the playoffs in 2011 and the best district record in program history. Lehman missed the 2019 postseason by one game.
In a statement, Pinchback thanked Lehman High administrators, student athletes and the community for their support.
“They have been nothing less than top notch to me and my family,” Pinchback said. “I am truly grateful for the time I spent here.”
Pinchback enters San Marcos High with 14 years of coaching experience, including a stop as head coach at DeSoto High, according to San Marcos CISD officials. During his time at Desoto, Pinchback was an assistant coach with state 6A championship winning teams.
Hays CISD officials have not set a timeline for hiring a new head boys basketball coach. Whoever is hired will become the program’s third head coach in five seasons.
Other Hays CISD coaching news
While one Lehman High coach departs, Hays CISD has tabbed the next person to fill the role as the school’s next girls soccer head coach and cross country leader.
Daryl Faulks, a member of the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches (TASCO) and coach with Lockhart ISD last season, was hired in early July to take over the Lobo girls soccer program.
Faulks takes over for Michael Banning, a longtime Lobo girls soccer assistant coach and head coach for two years. Banning was hired to lead the Johnson High girls soccer program.
During Banning’s two years as head coach, Lehman High went 13-22-3 overall. In 2018, the Lobos finished with a 10-10-1 mark and a 9-8-1 record in district play, narrowly missing the playoffs by two contests. It marked the most wins for a Lobo girls soccer team since 2015.
In addition, Hays CISD hired Faulks to lead Lehman’s boys and girls cross country teams. Lobo cross country in 2018 had been led by James Halatin, who later was hired as a coach at San Marcos High.
“I’m super excited to get started,” Faulks said.
