DSHS Choir qualifies ten for state competition

On Saturday, March 2, 25 DSHS choir students competed in the vocal UIL Solo and Ensemble regional competition at Austin’s McCallum High School. The event requires students to learn and memorize a vocal solo, accompanied by piano, and then perform it before a judge. Singers earn a rating based on their performance of the piece.

DSHS had 16 of 20 soloists earn a Superior Rating, which is the highest score a soloist can achieve. Of those 16, 10 will advance to the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition (TSSEC) in June at the University of Texas at Austin.

The DSHS TSSEC qualifiers are: James Bartling, Dylan Kunz, Josie Mau, Kyndal Miethke, Juliane Paine, Alyssa Schaefer, Ella Schroeder, Claire Tole, Juliana Ussia and Preston Willis.

DSHS students advance to international DECA competition

Five Dripping Springs High School students have qualified for the International DECA Competition based on state results. The state competition was held in Dallas; 27 students from DSHS competed. Students who will compete in Orlando, Fla., in April are: Teagan Crewson, Valari Graham, Lily Sethre-Brink, Varun Verma and Riley Wheaton.

DECA’s industry-validated competitive events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards in the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism. DECA’s flagship evaluation process involves students in both a written component such as an exam or report and an interactive component with an industry professional serving as a judge.

In addition to demonstrating mastery on a 100-question test on business administration, students completed two surprise-topic role plays on the following topics: Valari Graham, Retail Merchandising; Teagan Krewson, Entrepreneurship; Lily Sethre-Brink, Marketing Communications; Varun Verma, Business Finance; and Riley Wheaton, Sports and Entertainment Marketing.Michael Lemonds is the faculty advisor for DECA.
