A former Hays CISD educator and administrator has been tabbed as the next Chief Human Resources Officer in the district. Marivel Sedillo, who had previously worked as a teacher in Hays CISD for 16 years, was named as the Chief HR Officer April 22, filling a vacancy left after the abrupt departure of former HR officer Jim Baker in early March.
Baker, who had been hired by the district in March 2018, resigned after an employee within the district filed a complaint based on the “culture, climate and management” of the HR department. Details surrounding the resignation are still unknown.

Eric Wright, Hays CISD Superintendent, said Sedillo brings “a broad base of experience at all levels of a school district. During her tenure within Hays CISD, Sedillo was a teacher, principal and worked as director of Human Resources.
“She understands what it takes to find and hire the right people to ensure our students continue to have an educational experience that is second-to-none,” Wright said in a statement. “Her passion for students and staff members is amazing and her leadership is impeccable.”
Sedillo most recently served as an area executive director in Pflugerville ISD, responsible for providing support for principals, including instructional leadership, school culture, data analysis and community and family engagement.
Prior to her time in Pflugerville, Sedillo worked in Manor ISD in an executive leadership capacity, overseeing human resources and federal programs.
From 2007 to 2014, Sedillo served as the inaugural principal at Camino Real Elementary in Kyle, which earned recognized status and three gold performance acknowledgements.
In 2006, Sedillo was the director of secondary staffing for Round Rock ISD. From 2001 to 2006, she served as Hays CISD’s director of human resources. Prior to that she was an assistant principal, educational diagnostician and a bilingual kindergarten and first grade teacher in Hays CISD. She began her career in education in 1994 as a bilingual special education teacher in Austin ISD.
Sedillo said in a statement she is honored to be back in the district where she spent a majority of her career in education.
“Leaders in the education field often focus on managing expectations. As a leader, I see my role to inspire others to go beyond expectations,” Sedillo said. “We have an amazing team of teachers and staff and I am grateful to be in a position to help support them in the critical work we do for our students.”
Sedillo holds two bachelor’s degrees from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University). She has a master’s degree in special education from Texas State University and is planning to return to the University of Texas at Austin to complete her doctoral degree in educational leadership.
