Many mourning Mountain Citians attended the memorial service for Mayor Phillip Taylor on Friday at a packed Hays CISD PAC. The service honored Taylor’s life of service. To me, the service made it clear Taylor was intentionally serving God by serving others.
Monday evening’s city council meeting started with a moment of silence in honor of Taylor.
During the meeting, city council appointed Ralph McClendon as mayor.
The city will appoint an alderperson to fill the empty seat at the May 9 meeting. Applications and information on the position will be placed on the city’s Facebook page.
Tiffany Curnutt was assigned the tasks related to Mountain City’s website, tasks which had been handled by Taylor.
Also during the meeting, a detailed presentation was given by Carollo Engineers of Phase II of the Stormwater Drainage Study, which took most of the first hour of Monday’s meeting. The addition of swales and changes to existing drainage ditches to modify the current stormwater runoff was proposed and modeled.
One of the engineers commented that devising a solution to the stormwater challenge kept her awake at night.
The engineers found the critical issue is the lack of a flow outlet at the end of Live Oak Court which directly results in local flooding.
In order to consider implementing changes, the alderpersons discussed establishing a Storm Water Drainage Fee as part of the water bill. This item will appear on the May 9 agenda, with opportunity for feedback during public comments.
Earlier this year, the Mountain City Council moved Dumpster Days April 27 – 28. It moved from the 2nd Saturday in June (after garage sales the 1st Saturday in June), in hopes that it will not be as hot for the workers and those who drop off junk.
Remember, in a budget cut, the city currently plans to have Dumpster Days and Limb Days in alternating years. So, the next Dumpster Days weekend should be in 2021.
It’s time for Mountain Citians to gather junk in order to haul it to the open field at Live Oak and Mountain City drives (Bring a copy of your water bill as proof of residency). Mattresses can be dropped off with a $10 fee.
April 27-28 is also the weekend of Buda Wiener Dog Races, held even closer to Mountain City this year, at Buck’s Backyard on FM 1626.
Dr. Bob stopped KissMe from racing several years back because of a bad back. But, KissMe’s photo will show up at Booth No. 3 where my friend Jenn Pennington will offer dog portraits. KissMe was the only dachshund who volunteered to serve as one of her models when she tested her booth.
