For the first time in nearly five seasons, Lehman High's softball team is postseason bound.
By virtue of a 9-7 extra innings win over the Akins Eagles Friday, paired with a key Del Valle Cardinals loss to the Hays Rebels on the same night, Lehman (24-9, 10-6) secured the fourth and final playoff spot out of 25-6A and the program's first playoff berth since the 2014 campaign. It also marks the first time Lehman High's softball team has reached the postseason at the 6A level.
Lehman trailed Akins 4-2 through three innings before battling back in the fourth and fifth frames. Five unanswered runs scored over those two innings gave the Lobos a 7-4 advantage.
Akins, however, responded right back with a three-run sixth frame to tie the contest and eventually forced extra innings.
The Lobos tallied two runs in the top of the eighth to surge past the Eagles for the victory.
Lobo Ari Ybarra led the team by going 3-for-4 with three singles and a walk, while Seryna Avalos was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and two walks. Emily Perry finished with two RBI's on two hits and Audrey Dienhart also scored two RBI's on a pair of hits.
Lehman opens postseason play Thursday when they host the state-ranked New Braunfels Canyon Cougarettes at 7 p.m. at Lobo Field.
