Buda Oaks holds special Memorial Day celebration
Senior living community Buda Oaks had a very memorable Memorial Day. AMVETS of Kyle came out to assist the community’s veterans with their Changing of the Flag ceremony, followed by a BBQ lunch.
“We especially want to say thank you to AMVETS for the MIA/POW table ceremony. It was very informative. We also really appreciated the playing of ‘Taps.' It was beautiful and had some of us in tears,” said Activities Director Gena Gonzalez.
The community also displayed “memory flags” on the front lawn in honor of Memorial Day and those who have died in service to our country.
Hays County Food Bank collects thousands of pounds of food
This year’s winner of the Hays County Food Bank Spring Harvest Challenge in the shelf-stable category went to the Kyle Fire Department, Kyle Lions Club and Living Word Lutheran Church in Buda. Together, they raised a whopping 1,287 pounds of healthy canned goods.
Overall, 1,056 pounds of fresh produce and 5,055 pounds of shelf-made stable foods were collected and dropped off during the course of this food drive challenge. Hundreds of families who struggle benefitted from this food drive.
Live Oak Academy reaches graduation milestone
Live Oak Academy closed out the 2021-2022 school year with more than 200 students crossing the stage as graduates on June 1. Seniors also earned $45,000 in total scholarships. Principal Doug Agnew recognized the stellar achievements of his students, and thanked his staff, who for over the past five years have helped guide more than 1,000 students towards graduation.
Additionally, 375 students graduated from Lehman HS, 459 students graduated from Johnson HS and 373 students graduated from Hays HS.
San Marcos to get film studio
San Marcos City Council has approved an 820,000 square-foot TV, film and virtual production studio to be built by Hill Country Studios near Wonder World Drive and West Center Point Road, within the La Cima Development master-planned community. The studio is expected to bring thousands of industry jobs to the community and will feature modern lifestyle and collaborative workplace amenities including space for production offices, a 50-seat screening theater, sound stages, backlots and a full-service restaurant and coffee shop. Construction is expected to begin in April 2023, reaching completion in 2025.
