An effective Canyon Lake Hawks ground game wore down the Wimberley Texans in a 33-14 home loss Friday at Texan Stadium.
The Texans (1-2) found success on the offensive end in the first quarter as they got into scoring position on back-to-back drives; Wimberley, however, only came away with seven points.
Junior quarterback Cooper McCollum gave Wimberley an early 7-0 lead thanks to a four-yard jump pass touchdown to junior tight end Colby Boyle.
Momentum swung into the Hawks favor in the second frame after a 93-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Peyton McMullen to senior Chance Martelli.
Canyon Lake scored again later in the quarter on a 21-yard run from senior running back Jacob Ruff, his first of his three on the night, giving the Hawks the 13-7 lead going into halftime.
The game remained close in the third quarter as both defenses put up a fight; both teams managed only one touchdown each in the frame.
The Hawks scored on a 31-yard touchdown run by senior Caleb Almond, while Texans senior running back Guy Kypuros busted a 32-yard touchdown run up the middle. Canyon Lake led Wimberley 20-14 going into the fourth quarter.
But the Hawks’ offense wore down the Texan defense, and the clock, with their methodical rushing attack in the final quarter. Ruff found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter to give the Hawks a 33-14 lead.
Wimberley’s offense struggled in the final minutes and were unable to keep pace.
The Texans host Fredericksburg Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Texan Stadium.
