Two area teens were arrested earlier this month after they allegedly drove by and threatened another teen at gunpoint Dec. 4 in the Hays High parking lot after school hours.
Carlos Manuel Vences, 17, of Kyle, was booked into the Hays County Jail Dec. 4 on four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony, along with unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place, a third-degree felony. An Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer was also issued for Vences. Matthew Xavier Acosta, 17, of Buda, was booked Dec. 10 on multiple aggravated assault with a deadly weapons charges. According to Hays County Jail records, the incident marks the fifth time since July Acosta has been arrested, all for various crimes.
Authorities were dispatched around 5 p.m. Dec. 4 to the Hays High parking lot to investigate a reported aggravated assault, according to arrest affidavits magistrated by Hays County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Beth Smith and Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace Scott Cary,
When they arrived, a male teen told them he was parked in front of Hays High with a passenger when a white Honda SUV drove past his vehicle. The victim told authorities he recognized the front passenger as Vences, whom he knew. As the SUV drove by, Vences allegedly threw gang signs at him before the vehicle exited the parking lot, according to the affidavit.
While the victim was still in the parking lot, the SUV drove by again, this time with Vences pointing a silver handgun with a white handle at him. The victim said Vences allegedly made a slashing motion with his thumb across his neck, a gesture “indicating he would die.” The victim told authorities he was in “fear for his life.”
Authorities arrested Vences Dec. 5. A subsequent investigation led authorities to Acosta, who told authorities he drove the SUV Dec. 4 and that he was there to pick up a friend while having an occupant at the time of the incident. Acosta allegedly identified Vences as the occupant.
Vences is being held on $150,000 bond, while Acosta is being held on $75,000 bond.
