Challenger ousts incumbent in HCISD District 3 trustee race

UPDATE (10:08 p.m.):


With 100 percent precincts reporting, Will McManus and Michael Sánchez claimed victory in the races for the Hays CISD School Board Trustee At-Large and District 3 seats, respectively.


McManus won the At-Large seat with 58.18 percent of the vote, while Sánchez won the District 3 seat with 43.33 percent of the vote.


Out of 50,002 voters registered in the election for Hays CISD, 1,323 voted in the election.


After final results came in, McManus celebrated at Nate’s in Buda with some of his key supporters.


“I’m looking forward to working with the new administration and taking Hays CISD to just an average district to being an excellent district school district. I can’t wait to get started and I’m looking forward to moving our district forward and doing some really great things,” McManus said.


McManus said at the beginning of the election night he was “cautiously optimistic”.


“The community really came through and I think that they are looking forward to having someone on the board who is going to focus on academics, and also on protecting the tax payer's money.”

Will McManus took the lead for unofficial election results for the May 5 election for the Hays CISD Board of Trustees At-Large position, while Michael Sánchez won the seat for Single Member District 3.


As of the time of posting, Hays CISD reported McManus won 43.31 percent of absentee votes with 230 votes and 75.5 percent of early votes with 262 votes. Election day results showed a 258 votes with a total of 750 votes resulting in 58.18 percent of the total reported votes.


Susan Grey was second with 33.90 percent of absentee votes with 180 votes and 6.63 percent of early votes with 23 votes. Unofficial election day results showed 48 votes with a total of 251 votes with 19.47 percent of the reported vote.


Michelle Cohen came out with 22.79 percent of absentee votes with 121 votes and 17.87 percent of early votes with 62 votes. Unofficial election day results show 105 votes with a total of 288 votes with 22.34 percent of the reported vote.


As for Hays CISD District 3 Sánchez won with 78 votes resulting in 43.33 percent of the reported vote, according to unofficial election results.


Sánchez won 43.33 percent of absentee voting with 40 votes and 30.77 percent early votes with 12 votes.


The other candidates Valerie Hopkins and Bert A. Bronaugh, Jr. were tied at 24.72 percent of absentee voting resulting in 22 votes each. Early voting results showed Hopkins at 30.77 percent of the early voting with 12 votes and Bronaugh at 33.33 percent of the early voting with 13 votes.


Unofficial election day results showed Bronaugh with 19 votes resulting in a total of 54 votes and 30 percent of the reported vote. Hopkins received 7 election day votes resulting in a total of 41 votes and 22.78 percent of the reported vote.


The final candidate for District 3 Alejandro Correa received 5.47 percent of the total votes with 7 votes. Correa received 5.62 percent of absentee voting with five votes and 5.13 percent of early voting with two votes. Early voting results show Correa receiving zero votes resulting in a total of seven votes and 3.89 percent of the reported vote.

Candidate Bert A. Bronaugh, Jr. – 30 percent (54 votes)


Candidate Valerie Hopkins – 22.78 percent (41 votes)


Candiate Alejandro Correa — 3.89 percent (7 votes)
