A live bat found at Sycamore Springs Elementary in Dripping Springs late last month tested positive for rabies, according to a Hays County Sheriff's Office press release.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. Oct. 26 when authorities were dispatched to the campus for a live bat call.

The animal was discovered after it had fallen out of a student's jacket pocket as they were tossing the article clothing around. The bat was examined by the Department of State Health Services and tested positive for rabies, according to the release.

The condition of the student is unknown at this time; it's also unknown if the student handled or touched the bat at any point.

Anyone who might have come into physical contact with the animal should call the Hays County Sheriff's Office's Animal Control Unit at 512.393.7896 or the Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control at 254.778.6744.
