A man from Kyle was pronounced dead Friday evening after being struck by a van near the intersection of Riverside Drive and IH-35 in San Marcos.
According to eyewitnesses, 48-year-old Tyrus Dennis Piano had been walking on the sidewalk along the road around 7 p.m. when a van driving by jumped a curb and struck him.
The driver of the van, who has not been publicly identified by officials, was trying to flee the scene in the automobile when he lost control of the vehicle at a nearby roundabout and struck a tree, according to a City of San Marcos press release. Witnesses at the scene held the driver until the police arrived. A passenger in the van fled by foot, but was later taken into custody nearby by the Texas State University Police.
After having his blood tested, the driver of the van was booked into the Hays County Jail on an intoxication manslaughter charge, where he awaits a magistrate.
