Four Hays CISD seniors were recipients of a combined $12,500 in scholarships from Pedernales Electric Cooperative April 26.
The scholarships, announced during an awards ceremony in Johnson City, are part of $100,000 PEC gave to 28 local high school seniors for 2018, according to a press release.
Lehman High senior Reyna Webb, along with Hays High seniors Robert Woodworth and Sarah Moore received $2,500 scholarships. Sydney Hatmaker, a senior at Jack C. Hays High School, received a $5,000 scholarship.
The four students were selected out of a field of 360 applicants who vied for PEC scholarships.
PEC has supported local students through its scholarship program for more than a decade. By supporting future Hill Country leaders, the program illustrates PEC’s commitment to the cooperative principle, “concern for communities.”
Recipients were selected by a panel of independent judges based on their applicant profiles, including academic performance, community involvement, extracurricular activities and financial need. Applicants also submitted an essay in which they were asked to identify how a PEC scholarship would help them achieve their educational and career goals.
“We are committed to helping our future leaders grow, and the essays we received were a powerful reminder of just how much PEC, as a cooperative, supports and empowers our members,” said Trista Fugate, PEC’s director of community engagement. “These students each have so much promise, and we look forward to watching them succeed.”
