A Dripping Springs-area veteran claimed a landslide victory in the runoff for the Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Republican primary Tuesday.

John Burns defeated Robert Avera by capturing 66 percent of the 1,672 total votes cast, according to unofficial, final results. Results from Tuesday's election will be canvassed at a later date by the Hays County Commissioners Court.

Burns, a Navy veteran who is also a practicing attorney, held a sizable 521-231 lead over Avera after early voting results were released. Burns maintained his lead by securing 450 Election Day votes.

With the result, Burns will run unopposed in the November General Election for the JP4 seat, which is currently held by Terry Kyle, who is retiring. No candidates filed to run in the JP4 Democratic primary.
