young axis deer was killed on Poplar last week.  From the distance and depth of the puncture wounds on the head and the amount of the hindquarter that was eaten, some surmise it was killed by a mountain lion.

Jonah Evans, Texas Parks & Wildlife Mammologist, took a look at a photo.

“This kill does not have any of the standard characteristics that would lead me to consider it to be from a mountain lion.

Here are the two primary things that pop out to me:

First, it is not covered in any way. Mountain lions usually drag their prey somewhere safe to feed and then cover it with leaves.

Second, the hind quarters are consumed first. This is typical of canines. Lions tend to open the abdomen and remove the intestines before feeding on the organ meats.”

Not seeing the dead dear in person, Mr. Evans attributed the “canine” kill to a coyote or domestic dog.

Count the risk of a “canine kill” as one of many reasons to keep cats indoors.

Nextdoor.com, which can be set for “only Mountain City”, frequently shows listings for lost and found dogs and cats. It might be worth signing up, just to lend a helping hand with reuniting pets and owners.   I’m willing to provide to anyone with a Mountain City address the required invitation.

In a letter to the newspaper editor, my next door neighbor focused on another reason to keep cats inside: population control.

Other neighbors have complained of unneutered “tom cats” attacking their “indoor-outdoor” cats, bringing unwanted vet bills.

Remember, it’s state law that all dogs and cats over 4 months old must be current on rabies vaccinations.  A dead cat in San Marcos tested positive for rabies earlier this month.
