Rabies alert issued after dead bat found in Buda

UPDATE – 4:31 March 2 


According to a Buda press release, health officials could not determine if the bat had rabies. However, in those situations, the state treats it as a positive rabies case.


EARLIER 


The city of Buda has issued a rabies alert after a dead bat was found on the ground in the 100 block of Houston Street Wednesday.


According to city officials, the bat was found on the ground near the roadway at approximately 1:13 p.m. Wednesday. The bat was tested by the Department of State Health Services and was found to be decomposed.


Those who believe they or someone else may have come into contact with the animal should contact the Buda Animal Control (512.312.1001), Hays County Health Department (512.393.5525) or the Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control (254.778.6744).


Residents are reminded not to touch or handle a grounded bat.
