A South Texas woman was arrested in early February after she fled from a Kyle Police traffic stop along northbound Interstate 35 and led authorities on a chase that at times reached 100 miles per hour.
Cynthia Lizette Perez, 35, of Zapata, was arrested Feb. 17 for evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, which is a state jail felony.
Perez was released from the Hays County Jail Feb. 18 on $5,000 bond.
Kyle Police Chief Jeff Barnett said authorities received a disturbance call from a motorist who observed two people arguing in a vehicle on northbound I-35 around 3:35 p.m. Feb. 17.
Barnett said an officer located a white 2003 GMC Yukon at the 214 mile marker and observed a male passenger waiving for assistance while he was inside the vehicle.
Barnett said the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop at the 216 mile marker, but the driver, later identified as Perez, sped away with the male passenger still in the vehicle.
The resulting chase lasted for several miles and at times reached speeds of 100 miles per hour, Barnett said. The Yukon reached the 223 mile marker and took the exit for the SH 130 toll road before coming to an abrupt stop in the middle of traffic. At that time, police arrested Perez.
Both parties reported to police there was a verbal argument in the vehicle and no physical alteraction took place, Barnett said. It is unknown what sparked the argument.
Perez allegedly told police the reason for not stopping was that she wanted to go home to her children. She also allegedly told authorities she did see the police officer’s lights, but did not stop.
