Hays High School recognizes 2022 Valedictorian and Salutatorian
Serena RuiQi and Katheryn Wheeler were named the valedictorian and salutatorian of the Hays High School 2022 graduating class.
RuiQi, valedictorian, will attend the University of Texas at Austin where she plans to major in the Business honors program and will minor in courses that are part of the Pre-Med program. Following graduation from UT, she plans to enter medical school. She envisions a career as a doctor or physician with a focus in cardiovascular medicine. While in high school, RuiQi was in the math club freshman year, Youth in Government and Future Problem Solvers clubs during her sophomore year and the LEAF Club during her junior and senior year.
Wheeler, salutatorian, will attend Trinity University in San Antonio where she will major in Biology and be part of the school’s Pre-Med track. Following graduation from Trinity, she plans to enter medical school. She envisions a career in the medical field, specializing in surgery. While in high school, Wheeler was a member of the Hays Highsteppers Dance team, the Hays High Leo Club and the National Honor Society. Earlier this year, Wheeler was named as a recipient of the prestigious St. David’s Foundation Neal Kocurek Scholarship, which is awarded to students who are pursuing health-related studies at Texas colleges and universities. The scholarship provides financial assistance for all four years of undergraduate students, as well as all four years of medical school.
Buda seniors celebrate World Baking Day
Few things are more comforting than warm cookies and a cold glass of milk — and the ladies at Buda Oaks, an assisted living and memory care community in Buda, know that. In honor of World Baking Day on May 17, some residents got inspired and decided to celebrate by making homemade chocolate chip and pecan cookies. They rolled up their sleeves and started baking the treats, then showed off the delicious results.
Onion Creek Senior Center style show
The Buda #1612 chapter of TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) had a Spring Style Show and luncheon at the Onion Creek Senior Center on May 24. Members modeled spring fashions at the event, which was a fundraiser for the group. President Ruth Cook introduced the models, spoke about the weight-loss support group and how the program encourages wellness and camaraderie.
Dos Olivos Market in Buda celebrates second anniversary
Dos Olivos Market celebrated its second anniversary of their Buda location, Los Olivos Market, on May 28 with live music, food samples from Alta Gama Foods and wine samples from William Chris Vineyards. Los Olivos also served guests their award-winning paella, along with birthday cake and a complimentary champagne toast.
World War II-era planes perform Memorial Day fly-over
On May 30, a group of WWII planes of the Central Texas Wing of the Commemorative Air Force performed a flyover in downtown Buda. The aircrafts came from Bastrop and flew over Buda City Hall, then headed downtown. The city of Buda was a participating sponsor alongside Memorial Miniature Golf and WWII Museum in Buda, and the cities of Kyle and Bastrop, in observance of Memorial Day.
Kyle honors veterans for Memorial Day
The Kyle community joined veterans at Kyle VFW Post 12058 for a day of remembrance for those who died in military service at the Post’s Memorial Day Ceremony on May 30. The program included retired U.S. Air Force Major General Chris Adams as the guest speaker, a Memorial Day Proclamation read by Mayor Pro Tem Robert Rizo, a rendition of the National Anthem and Taps by Isabelle Wright and Kaddon Crossen, a Warbird flyover with three aircrafts from the Commemorative Air Force, flag ceremony with local Boy Scouts and a volley of three rounds from their Honor Guard.
