A 27 point first half blitz was how the Dripping Springs Tigers set the tone in a lopsided 55-21 win over the Bastrop Bears in the inaugural football game played at the new Tiger Stadium.
Leading the way for the Tigers was quarterback Trevor Greenman, who amassed 334 of the Tigers’ 531 yards of total offense on the day.
Greenman and the Tiger offense needed only four plays to light up the stadium’s new scoreboard. A 15-yard strike from Greenman to wide receiver Johnny Hoyle gave Dripping Springs a 7-0 lead.
Dripping Springs’ first quarter advantage expanded to 14-0 after Greenman broke through for a 67-yard touchdown. A pair of Greenman touchdown passes to Hoyle and wide receiver Curtis Raymond gave the Tigers a 27-0 lead at halftime.
On defense, Dripping Springs held Bastrop’s run-oriented offense to only 150 total yards in the first half; the Bears amassed 281 total yards in the game.
Bears quarterback Dreyson Watters led the team with 103 rushing yards on 21 carries.
Fireworks broke out to start the second half as Dripping Springs and Bastrop traded 90-plus yard kickoff returns in the first 30 seconds of the third quarter.
But a methodical third quarter drive capped off by a 2-yard touchdown run by junior Jake Cox put Dripping Springs out of reach for good.
Senior Ben Owens rushed for 81 yards on two carries, while Cox finished with 37 yards on four carries.
Hoyle, whose two catches of the day were both touchdowns, finished with a game-high 97 receiving yards.
Dripping Springs travels to play at Vista Ridge on Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
