Hays Rebels (1-4, 0-1) vs. Westlake Chaparrals (5-0, 1-0)
When: Friday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Bob Shelton Stadium
Last week: Lake Travis 60, Hays 34; Westlake 33, Vandegrift 31
Last meeting (2016): Westlake 44, Hays 14
Faced with a four game losing streak, Hays looks to right the ship when they host a Westlake team that’s steamrolled through opponents in the first half of the season. Through five games, Westlake has put up close to 2,400 total yards and has scored an average of 47 points per contest. Surrounding QB Taylor Anderson is a plethora of weapons that include RB Nakia Watson, WR Tate Young and WR Jake Ramos. Hays’ offense, led by QB Xavier Martinez and RB Thai Mayberry, also faces an uphill climb against a stingy Chaparral defense. Westlake’s only given up 76 total points this season. But where Hays may find footing is its ability to compete. Putting up a fight against Lake Travis could set the tone for a Rebel squad that aims for a big upset.
Lehman Lobos (1-4, 0-1) at Vandegrift Vipers (2-3, 0-1)
When: Friday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Gupton Stadium
Last week: Vista Ridge 49, Lehman 7; Westlake 33, Vandegrift 31
Last meeting (2016): Vandegrift 55, Lehman 0
The continued emergence of Bryant Lewis at quarterback was one of the lone bright spots for a Lobo team that suffered its second straight loss in a row. The Lobos may have to rely on Lewis once again as they go up against a Vandegrift team that’s only allowed 30 or more points twice this season. Lehman’s offense will try to get around standout players such as DE Oso Ifesinachukwu. The Lobo defense, which has struggled so far this year, will try to stop a Vandegrift offense that’s recently begun to find its groove. QB Justin Moore has thrown for 1,184 yards, while RB Isiah Smallwood has rushed for 364 yards.
