UPDATE - 9:15 a.m.

A Wimberley man is dead and a Hays County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured after a shootout at the site of a reported break-in along Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley took place early Friday.

According to a Hays County Press Release, the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 3:47 a.m. regarding a man with a gun who was possibly breaking into Jean’s Antiques, located in the 11500 block of Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley.

Several deputies arrived in the area and while attempting to locate the suspect, someone began to shoot at deputies, striking their vehicles and wounding one deputy, according to a press release.

Deputies fired back and the suspect retreated into the woods. The suspect, identified as Rocky Miles West, 26, of Wimberley, was located after a short search and was found deceased, according to the release. West had an extensive criminal history and his last arrest was in January 2017 for a family violence charge of assault with bodily injury.

It’s unknown at this time if West’s wounds were self-inflicted or if his injuries were caused by shots fired by deputies.

The injured deputy was identified as Benjamin Gieselman, 28, who is a three-year veteran of the HCSO. Gieselman suffered non-life threatening injuries to his legs and upper body. He was airlfted to an Austin-area hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. No other deputies suffered injuries in the incident.

The HCSO Criminal Investigations Division, as well as the Texas Rangers, are conducting an investigation into the incident.
