DRIPPING SPRINGS -- Last week, Dripping Springs’ softball shortstop Taylor Anderson broke the school’s single season stolen bases record of 57, set in 2017 by Camille Corona, another Lady Tigers shortstop now playing for the Longhorns at the University of Texas in Austin. “I got close last year with COVID going on, so it was one of my goals this year,” Anderson said, after a 7-0 win over Lehman last Thursday.
Corona wears #28 at Texas but wore #3 at Dripping Springs. Was it fate or meant to be? Anderson may not know. “My freshman year the seniors told me #3 was her [Corona’s] number. I guess it was just a coincidence,” Anderson, now a junior, said. When asked if Corona might have hurt feelings about her record being broken, she said, “I hope not,” and added, “I don’t know her personally, but I’ve seen her play on TV.”
Corona still holds the career record for stolen bases at 106 (2016-2018) and could have added more to that record. “She started hitting doubles and triples and didn’t have as much of an opportunity to steal,” assistant coach Paige Shaffer said about the record. “I’ll do whatever I can to get on base and score runs for our team,” Anderson said, “There’s no way I’m going to say I don’t want to hit doubles and triples.”
The single season stolen base record may not be Corona’s only record to fall. The career stolen base record of 106 could be next and with Anderson’s batting average of .596, Corona’s .577 record set in 2018 may be broken too. “I think in stolen bases I’m in the top three in the nation, but I want to be #1,” another of Anderson’s goals.
No Foolin’ 500 Career Wins
Dripping Springs’ Head Softball Coach Wade Womack recorded his 500th career win. The Lady Tigers softball team scored a run in the top of the third inning on April 1 to break a 2-2 tie and held Boerne Champion scoreless for six innings, for a 3-2 win and #500 for their coach.
Womack has coached softball for 25 years, 19 years as a head coach, and has been the Lady Tigers Head Coach for 9 years, after taking over for Keith Tuck who retired and passed away suddenly in November of 2013.
DS Softball and Baseball Host Senior Night
Dripping Springs softball 20-9 (11-2) and baseball 15-10 (8-4) teams will honor their seniors on Friday, April 22 at 7 p.m. at DSHS. DS Softball vs Kerrville Tivy (final home game of the regular season) and DS Baseball vs. Lehman. Tiger baseball is coming off a huge 6-1 win over Alamo Heights.
