Success came in threes for the Dripping Springs Tigers Friday at Oren Stadium in San Antonio.
A career-high three rushing touchdowns from running back Jake Cox, along with a career-high three interceptions from defensive back Brittan Howeth, were catalysts for the Tigers’ 35-14 win over the Alamo Heights Mules.
The victory kept the state-ranked Tigers (8-0, 5-0) in line for a potential outright district title with two games left in the season.
Howeth and the Tiger defense set the tone early in the contest with a key interception in the end zone to end Alamo Height’s first drive of the game.
Momentum carried over to the offense which literally hit the ground running.
A 67-yard touchdown run by Cox on the ensuing drive gave Dripping Springs a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter. The lead expanded to 14-0 via a 9-yard touchdown run by Cox, who finished the game with 131 yards on eight carries and three scores.
Dripping Springs defense took advantage of an Alamo Heights miscue several plays later. Howeth secured his second of three first quarter interceptions, which then led to an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trevor Greenman to wide receiver Parker Alford.
Dripping Springs led 20-0 after one quarter and never looked back from there. An early second quarter touchdown pass from Greenman to wide receiver Enzo Arnold gave the Tigers’ a 27-0 lead at intermission.
Cox added his third score of the game on a 41-yard run to increase the Tiger advantage to 34-0.
Alamo Heights, which struggled to find consistency on offense, tallied its first touchdown on a run from Max Gonzales.
But the Mules couldn’t decipher a relentless Tiger blitz that kept the Mule pass attack grounded. Alamo Heights’ lone passing touchdown of the night came late in the fourth quarter.
Dripping Springs will look to claim at least a share of the 26-5A crown when they take on second place Medina Valley Nov. 3 at Tiger Stadium.
