The Tigers (25-3) entered the UIL 5A regional finals after defeating Sharyland High School from Mission on Friday with a final score of 2-0.
The regional finals were held in Corpus Christi on Saturday. In the regional finals The Tigers faced Porter High School from Brownsville (22-3-2).
During the 2021 postseason Porter High School defeated the Tigers in the 4th round of the playoffs. This year the Tigers shutout the Cowboys with strong defense by the entire Tiger team. The Tigers have punched their ticket to the state tournament next Thursday in Georgetown.
In the starting lineup there are 4 players that have played together since the age of 4. This core group has progressed through club level competition.and they have brought a wealth of experience to the Tiger Soccer program.
According to the school roster there are currently 10 seniors and 3 have signed to play at the college level in the fall. The senior players are:
Enrique Alvarez (capt), Adam Knutson (capt), Javier Ortega (capt), Ian Driggers, Brenden Gajewski, Javier Gonzalez, Chase Menjivar, Colin Patrick, Matthew Patrick, Diego Zamudio.
According to the team historian this is the 2nd appearance in the state tournament in school history. The last Tiger team to play in the state tournament was in 2010 and was led by Kris Tyrpak who went on to play at the pro level.
The Tigers are currently 25-3, with 2 of the losses to #1 and #2 ranked teams in division 5A. They played these teams early in the season and gained tremendous experience which carried over to district play. The Tigers have set a school record with 25 wins, 116 goals and have only allowed 16 goals this season.
There are only 4 teams remaining in the UIL 5A division state tournament. The Tigers will play Katy Jordan on Thursday, April 14, 2022 at 5pm at Georgetown High School.
