Multiple one-on-one fights involving Lehman High students over a two-day period forced Hays CISD officials to enact a "hold-in-place" order at the campus Wednesday afternoon.
Tim Savoy, Hays CISD public information officer, said district officials called a hold-in-place order at 2 p.m. Wednesday, which lasted for 50 minutes. A hold-in-place order entails the school turning off its bell system and keeping students in their classrooms.
The order was called after a handful of fights broke out at the campus. The initial fight occurred Tuesday between two male Lehman High students who were believed to have been fighting over a love interest, Savoy said.
Tension from the first fight continued into Wednesday, when friends of the first two combatants engaged in two to three fights over a short period of time late in the morning.
Savoy said Student Resource Officers (SROs) from other campuses were called into assist following Wednesday's fights. SROs enacted the hold-in-place to avoid risking a fight between passing periods, while also pulling out students who may have been involved in the incident, Savoy said.
Roughly six to eight students were involved in the fights and all have been identified, Savoy said. It is unknown what discipline the students could face.
Hays CISD also had several SROs at Lehman High when school was dismissed Wednesday.
District officials were then made aware of a Twitter account called "Hays versus Lehman," which they believe was created Wednesday.
The account showed videos of students at Hays and Lehman high schools fighting. Savoy said it's not believed students from each campus were fighting each other.
"We think it's probably a competition perhaps to see which school could have the best fight video," Savoy said.
Hays CISD has reported the account to Twitter and is working with authorities to identify students in the videos.
