A 21-point first quarter blitz helped the Dripping Springs Tigers secure a 35-14 win over the Marble Falls Mustangs Friday and the outright District 26-5A championship.
Dripping Springs’ win, which improved the team to 10-0 overall and 7-0 in district, marks the first time in over 50 years the Tigers have finished undefeated in the regular season. It also marked the first time a Dripping Springs football team has gone 10-0.
The Tigers kicked off to start, but a muffed return by Marble Falls gave the Tigers the ball. Dripping Springs immediately scored and set the tone for the first quarter.
Senior Trevor Greenman went on to go 3 of 4 passing for 92 yards, and 45 yards on the ground with a touchdown in the first quarter. On the defensive side, senior Reed Beverly tallied 4 tackles in the first frame.
Dripping Springs led 21-0 after the first quarter but was limited to only one touchdown in the second frame. Marble Falls scored a touchdown in the second quarter to cut Dripping Springs' lead to 28-7 at halftime.
Dripping Springs started the second half with the ball and scored quickly by putting together a drive that lasted over 5 minutes.
Senior Keith Mitchhart set up the Tigers in the red zone with an amazing reception, which was later capped off with a five-yard touchdown run from senior Alec Bockelman.
Both defenses stepped up in the second half and the Tigers began to play second team players on both sides of the ball.
Marble Falls added a late fourth quarter touchdown to close the game.
Dripping Springs begins the playoffs against the LBJ Jaguars Nov. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Kelley Reeves Athletic Complex in Round Rock.
