The Wimberley Texans remained unbeaten in district play after scoring a stunning 49-35 football upset win over the Navarro Panthers Friday at Texan Stadium.
Wimberley, which improved to 8-1 on the season, handed Navarro its first loss in district play since 2013 and ended the Panthers 31-game regular season win-streak.
Navarro held its only lead of the game at 7-0 roughly halfway into the first quarter.
Wimberley got on the scoreboard with a 29-yard touchdown pass from quarterback JoJo Weeks to senior Gavin Martinez. Navarro held a 7-6 lead after a missed Texan extra point.
However, the Panthers were not in the lead for long. A 23-yard pass from Weeks, followed by a two-point conversion, placed Wimberley ahead at 14-7.
“We were just planning on throwing the ball any way that we could,” Weeks said. “We were expecting them to go at a single high safety, but they still couldn’t stop us the whole night.”
Starting the second quarter with a Panther fumble, they recovered and started on their own 44-yard line.
Navarro tied the score at 14-14 in the second frame as Panther quarterback Will Eveld found success passing on the perimeter.
Wimberley responded just before halftime when Weeks found a wide-open Cade Stoever for a touchdown to give Wimberley a 20-14 lead at halftime.
Stoever secured his second touchdown of the night in the third quarter, which then gave the Texans a 26-14 advantage.
Wimberley held a 34-21 lead over Navarro after three quarters of play.
“I haven’t beaten these kids ever in football in my life,” Weeks said. “This was a great win for us, great win for the seniors, and especially great because this was my last home game here.”
Navarro manufactured a last-ditch rally in the fourth frame. Fourteen unanswered Navarro points placed the Panthers back in the contest, as they cut the Wimberley lead to 41-35
The Texans scored one last touchdown to pull away and secure the win.
Wimberley will have its bye week Friday and closes the regular season against Hondo Nov. 10.
