Escaped convict turns over a new leaf
After Joe Horner’s battle with the buffalo soldiers on Oct. 11, 1874, the wild young outlaw seemed headed for an early grave. Who could have imagined that half a century later he would be the guest of honor at a state funeral in Oklahoma?

You will never get these days back
'One day, you're 17 and you're planning for someday. And then quietly, without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And then someday is yesterday. And this is your life.' - John Green ——— I talk to my mom on the phone almost every day. We talk about how our day went, funny stories about her students, what’s for dinner at our houses, something that my beagle Finn did that day and when the next season of “Virgin River” is supposed to come out because we were left on a cliffhanger.

Tent showman was toast of West Texas
Harley Sadler, a household name throughout West Texas, made his last personal appearance at a benefit for the Boy Scouts on Oct. 9, 1954, but this time there would be no curtain call for the much loved king of the tent shows.

Ode to a pirate
A few weeks ago, one of my favorite musicians passed away. Jimmy Buffett was a great songwriter and a very entertaining performer.

'And that has made all the difference:' On Frost, goodbyes, new beginnings
“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same …” — Robert Frost

Where was I?
I heard some of y’all who still subscribe to a newspaper have been wonderin’ what happened to me. I don’t know if those folks were worried about my well-being or asking if I was finally determined to be legally crazy and placed in a padded cell. I know I haven’t been writing my column as often as I used to, and there are several reasons for my hiatus from the newspapers.

You jump, I jump, Jack
What if you were held responsible for the actions of another? What if you spent the rest of your life behind bars because of a crime you didn’t commit? What if you were sentenced to death?

Will this drought ever end?
When you grow up in Texas, or have at least lived here for a few years, you know that the summers can be brutal. There is little to no rain and it’s scorching hot to the point where you feel like you are melting the second you step outside.
