STAFF REPORT
Local rainfall guru – and Kyle’s own director of parks, recreation, facilities and maintenance – Kerry Urbanowicz reports that, even if there is no more rainfall in 2015, “we will end the year well above average.”
Urbanowicz has been tracking rainfall locally for many years. The enclosed chart goes back to 2005 and shows spikes and monthly averages.
2015 is special so far because January through June has been the wettest first six month on record. From January 1, 2015 to June 30, 2015, Kyle recorded 41.96” of rain.
According to Urbanowicz, that means a 19.26” per month average for the same period.
But this 6 month period is not the wettest overall. The most recorded rainfall in a six-month period fell between May and October 2013, with 50.60” of rain. During that period, the Halloween flood of 2013, 15.34” of rain came down in one day. The flooding was the result of Hurricane Raymond hitting the Texas coast and moving ashore.
Other interesting facts: The wettest year in Kyle was 2013, when 62.54” of rain fell.
Another weather driven event in Kyle was the tornado, which hit Kyle Nov. 15, 2001. That day, 7.65” of rain fell, giving Kyle an overall November 2001 monthly rainfall of 9.98”.
