DRIPPING SPRINGS – Some Dripping Springs High School (DSHS) health science students are advancing to the international HOSA competition.

HOSA was known as Health Occupations Students of America, but is now called Future Health Professionals.
Three DSHS students qualified for international competition after their state performances. Texas HOSA recognizes the top five winners for each event but only three can advance to internationals. Natalie Chavez placed first in Prepared Speaking while Trevor Burk and Tirth Patel placed in the top 10% in the Healthcare Issues Exam. Chavez qualified for the international competition for the second straight year.

Eight DSHS students qualified for the state competition: Ella Smith for Physical Therapy, Makenna Blakesley for Medical Spelling, Cassie Argento-Bird for Veterinary Science, Mia Perez for Extemporaneous Writing and Connor Johnson for Healthcare Informatics.

“We have had over 100 members each year for the last four years,” Jessica Chambers, HOSA advisor, said. “Our students love HOSA and it gives me the opportunity to build relationships with our students beyond the classroom as they pursue higher education.”
HOSA is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of ACTE. HOSA’s two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.
