Sheriff says Hays County Government Center made safer by Enforcement Division

STAFF REPORT

With more than 165 arrests at the Hays County Government Center in 2012, Sheriff Gary Cutler says the Enforcement Division of the Hays County Sheriff’s Office helps make the building safer for the county employees and residents who use it.

The $60 million building, which opened last year, houses 17 county offices, four District Courts, two Associate Courts, two County Courts at Law, one Justice of the Peace, the Attorney General’s Court and Juvenile Court.

Cutler said the officers in the Enforcement Division screened 238,068 visitors and searched 189,817 bags, purses and packages.

During those searches, Sheriff’s deputies found 27 subjects attempting to enter the center in possession of illegal or prohibited items such as weapons or drugs. They responded to 13,873 incidents including escorts, alarms, suspicious packages and EMS requests.

Deputies also transported 2,356 inmates to and from the Hays County Jail to the District and County Courts.

“The Government Center Enforcement Division continues to strive to maintain a safe place to conduct business,” Cutler said.
