DRIPPING SPRINGS -- Dripping Springs High School (DSHS) boys earned a second-straight regional wrestling championship on April 17.
Nine wrestlers, eight boys and one girl, qualified for the state meet. Alec Rill (170 pounds) and Alyson Brownson-Welch (128 pounds) finished in first place. Rill defeated Mission Sharyland High School’s Moses Rodriguez in the title match with a fall at 5:48, while Brownson-Welch earned an 8-0 major decision over Corpus Christi King’s Zoe Fowler.
Earning runner-up regional finishes and advancing to the state meet are Hagen Shipley (120 pounds), Cody Barron (138 pounds), Daniel Mayes (160 pounds), Luke Norton (182 pounds), Grant Clarno (220 pounds), and Christian Prehar (285 pounds). Jefferson Guerrero (152 pounds) earned a third-place finish to also advance to the state competition.
Guerrero and Norton will be making their third straight appearance at the state meet while Prehar, Mayes and Brownson-Welch will make their second trip.
The DSHS boys’ team totaled 234 team points to finish 123 points ahead of second-place Canyon High School.
The state tournament will be held Friday, April 23, at the Berry Center in Cypress.
