KYLE — Kyle City Council member Claudia Zapata submitted her resignation to the city secretary Friday, Sept. 25.
According to agenda documents for the Monday, Oct. 5, council meeting, Zapata’s resignation is effective Saturday, Oct. 3. However, council has the authority to formally accept the resignation, if desired.
State law and city charter notes that the city must now hold an election to fill the District 3 seat prior to Jan. 31, 2027, read the documents. The election must be on the earliest uniform election date within 120 days and provide adequate time to call the election.
The next uniform date is Saturday, Dec. 12.
The document also clarified that the council member shall continue in her role until the successor is qualified to serve, whether or not the resignation is accepted by council, which, at the earliest, would be Wednesday, Dec. 23. If the election were to require a runoff, the candidate would not be qualified until January.
If Zapata chose to not attend the meetings after the date listed on her resignation, she would not receive her monthly salary and would be subject to other action by council, continued the document.
Council will approve or deny the resignation at its Oct. 5 meeting, as well as approve or deny an ordinance calling a special election for Dec. 12. If the ordinance is approved, applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at the Kyle Public Safety Center, located at 1700 Kohlers Crossing.
Zapata was not immediately available for comment. She stated that she will be releasing a full statement on social media at a later time.
