Doug Ragsdale has spent the past 40 years as a teacher and a coach with the Hays Consolidated Independent School District. He held many positions including principal, assistant principal, defensive and offensive football coordinator, and head baseball coach. He also taught every level of biology.
Ragsdale retired from the Hays CISD in the spring.
Retiring now gives him the time to work for himself; on his own schedule. He decided to start his own business almost immediately after retiring.
“I won’t have to be at the school every day at 8 o’clock, and I will get to spend more time with my family,” Ragsdale said.
He will also be spending much of his free time helping others in the community complete minor tasks around their house that they are unable to do themselves due to age, experience or situation.
“Doing this kind of thing after I retired had been in the back of my mind for about a year,” he said.
For years, Ragsdale’s parents were able to do minor home repair on their own, but his father died and his mother, now 85 years old, has no one to help her do minor repairs around her house.
“I’m doing this as an honor to my mother,” he said.
His mission is to be able to help people like his mother who need little things done around their house, but are not capable of doing the tasks themselves.
He recently set up a website that allows people to contact him for help explaining his personal reasons for starting this service.
The site, let-me-help.org also includes a list of the types of small jobs that he is able to do, such as brush removal and minor carpentry.
It also explains that recipients must pay for materials and $15 for his gas costs.
“I enjoy working with my hands,” Ragsdale said, “and as a Christian we were meant to help others.”
