Sharpen your pencils, writers

The Friends of the Buda Library and the Hays Free Press are sponsoring a Young Writers Contest again this summer. Last year’s event was a roaring success with more than twenty outstanding entries. There will be two age group divisions with each one writing on a different prompt. Younger authors, ages 8-12, are encouraged to follow their imaginations around this idea:


It was very late on a Tuesday evening, and Miss Martha was just finishing up at the library. As she prepared to turn out the lights and lock the doors, she was surprised to find a large group standing inside the library watching her.


“Oh, my!” cried Miss Martha. “Whatever are you doing here!”


The elephant spoke first.


More mature writers (ages 13-18) are asked to write no more than 500 words on this inspiration:


Robert headed to the library one afternoon to finish his report about the history of the Holocaust. He found a rather lengthy volume that he thought would do the trick. When he lifted it up, he found it surprisingly light. When he sat down and opened it, he found that the pages had been cut out in the center, and to his puzzlement, replaced with...


The complete guidelines are on the Friends of the Library website and are also available at the library. First place winners in each age division will receive a check for $100, and their essays will be printed in the Hays Free Press.
