Mr. David Gerald Young, 65, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 12, 1947. He was called from his home to be with our Lord on October 9, 2012.
He is survived by his sons and their families, Shane Young and wife Elissha and grandchildren Kelsey, Kolten and Aurora of Kyle, Shawn Young and Lacy Kellam and grandchildren Nancy and Zephany of Austin, Jonathan of Austin, Jordan McCorkle of San Francisco, Calif.; two brothers and one sister and many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his beloved poodle, his buddy and companion, Scooter.
He enlisted in the United States Navy with his best friend and was stationed on an air carrier overseas. During the deployment there was an explosion that put the ship out of commission. This brought him home to his family in Houston, where he received an Honorable Discharge from service. At that point, he met Melody Edwards, with whom he married and began a family. He relocated to the Lubbock area and began a career in law enforcement.
Dave departed with over 35 years of law enforcement expertise and served his communities in many different capacities. He began his career as a Texas Peace Officer in Lubbock, working for the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office. From there, he spent a period of service at Buffalo Springs Lake before transferring to Slaton Police Department as a patrolman. A short time later he moved to Lamesa Police Department, where he achieved a promotion to Sergeant during his employment. In 1991, Dave was accepted as the Chief of Police for the Kyle Police Department, serving in this capacity until retirement in 1997. He continued in the field as a security officer, working until the day he passed. He completed an uncountable amount of hours of training, attended many seminars and conferences pertaining to community safety and police work and made every effort to learn as much as he could about being a police officer. His passion was sharing this information with fellow officers and colleagues. Two of the greatest achievements of his career were the completion of curriculum at the nationally recognized Bill Blackwood Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas and the recognition of permanent licensing as a Master Peace Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. Where most would have magazines sitting on their coffee tables, Dave had Penal Code and Traffic Law books for visitors to enjoy.
Dad, we miss you and love you so much! You were the greatest anyone could have asked for and we look forward to reuniting again in Heaven!
