Author S.C. Gwynne does readings, book signings
Sam Gwynne is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared extensively in Time, for which he worked as bureau chief, national correspondent and senior editor from 1988 to 2000, and in Texas Monthly, where he was executive editor. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, Harper’s, and California. His previous book, “Outlaw Bank” (co-authored with Jonathan Beaty), detailed the rise and fall of the corrupt global bank BCCI. He is the Pulitzer Prize finalist and best-selling author of “Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker.” Gwynne lives in Austin with his wife and daughter. He will read at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 at the The Wittliff Collections Alkek Library, Texas State University, and at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 at the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center in Kyle. Both events are free and open to the public.
Fall story festival
Families are invited to a Fall Story Festival from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the San Marcos Public Library. Wear a costume and enjoy crafts, stories and face painting to celebrate fall with the Texas State University Student Reading Council. Their goal is to promote literacy at the local, state and national levels.
Media enrichment programs for girls
Beginning on Saturday, Oct. 20, the San Marcos Library will begin hosting free Latinitas Saturday Camps for girls who are age 9-14. The first camp features Dia De Los Muertos Face Painting and Photography from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Latinitas, a nonprofit organization, seeks to help young girls build confidence and discover their voice through media and technology.
Wimberley Players host annual fundraiser
Enjoy live music featuring Ray Benson & Asleep at the Wheel at the annual Wimberley Players fundraiser. The event will include catering by A Taste of the Town and a live auction. This shindig, for which you’ll need tickets, takes place at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Old Glory Ranch in Wimberley.
A book on the making of Lonesome Dove
“Lonesome Dove,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Larry McMurtry, was made into a television miniseries that won seven Emmys and is widely acclaimed as the greatest Western ever made. The Lonesone Dove Collection is on permanent display at the Witliff Collections at Texas State University. From hats to gun belts to boots, the complete outfits of Augustus “Gus” McCrae, Woodrow F. Call, and Lorena Wood (played by Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones and Diane Lane) are just a few of the many “making of” materials on permanent display from the beloved miniseries. This exhibition archive takes visitors behind the scenes of the Emmy-winning show, with a look at props and principal costumes, set designs, costume sketches and production notes, Bill Wittliff’s screenplay drafts, script pages, photographs and more. A new look at the creation of the novel and the miniseries, “A Book on the Making of Lonesome Dove,” expands on writer John Spong’s Texas Monthly cover story of July 2010 by interviewing forty of the key people connected to Lonesome Dove, including McMurtry, actors Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Anjelica Huston, Diane Lane, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, D.B. Sweeney and director Simon Wincer. Accompanying the recollections are studio photographs by Jeff Wilson. Screenwriter, co-executive producer and photographer Bill Wittliff, author John Spong, and Jeff Wilson, who photographed the archive collection, will talk about the new volume in the Wittliff Collections’ book series and take questions from the audience. Signed copies of the book will be for sale. Join the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University for this special event at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in the LBJ Student Center Ballroom. Admission is free but attendees must RSVP by emailing [email protected]. Seating will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Pumpkin puppet show
The San Marcos Public Library presents Big Pumpkin, a Halloween Story, a not-so-scary holiday tale that is just right for children ages two and up. The shows are at 10 and 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19.
