Man shooting squirrels puts Wallace on lockdown

Classes have resumed at Wallace Middle School after the campus was placed on lockdown when a transportation employee saw a man with a gun nearby. According to Hays CISD spokesman Tim Savoy, police quickly found the man this morning.

"It appears it was a man on his own property next door to the school with a pellet gun trying to shoot a squirrel," Savoy said in an email to Hays CISD trustees. "There is no danger to students. If necessary, we will send more information."

The district is issuing an Alert Now phone message to parents and is sending the following letter home this afternoon:

Dear Parents,

Around 10:00 a.m., we briefly placed our campus in lock down. It was reported to us that a man was outside, near our campus with a gun. Fortunately, our campus was never in any danger.

Kyle police officers and deputies from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office responded within minutes and located the person who had been described. It was a neighbor to our school who was on his own property with a pellet gun attempting to shoot at a squirrel.

I want you to know how proud I am of the Wallace staff and your children. Everyone reacted swiftly and appropriately until we could determine there was no threat to the school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Brenda Agnew

Principal

Reports do not indicate whether the man bagged his squirrel.
